Display and Performance
The MSI G24C4 sports a 24-inch curved VA panel with a 1920 x 1080 resolution, a 144hz refresh rate, and a 1ms boosted response time. The backlight is limited to 250 cd/m2, while the contrast ratio sits at 3000:1 like most VA panels.
The screen’s 1500r curvature is steeper than the usual, but it is less noticeable on this model since it is smaller. Most users won’t struggle with the MSI G24C4’s size and resolution since it’s very common everywhere. This format is as great for productivity as it is for gaming since visibility is great so you won’t struggle with small objects like text.
It is very easy to run games at high-refresh rates with most GPUs, so maxing out the monitor will be doable for most people. The MSI G24C4 is capable of fantastic color quality starting with its 100% sRGB and around 88% DCI-P3 coverages. Color accuracy by default has an average of 2.14, so gamers won’t need to calibrate the monitor right away. These results are above average to great for gaming monitors, but we consider it to be fantastic for a budget option.
Calibrating the MSI G24C4 provided great results with a lower dE average of 1.09 which is already good enough for editing work. However, the cost of a colorimeter isn’t practical in this case since you might as well get a better model if your primary purpose is content creation or editing work. Gamers will get away with a few tweaks starting the with backlight. T
he MSI G24C4 doesn’t get very bright since it only managed 230 cd/m2 at 100% brightness. Its contrast ratio also tapered off at 1840:1 at 60% brightness which is a bit low for today’s standards for VA panels. However, it’s still higher than what most IPS and TN monitors can offer so the black luminance is still deep and convincing when compared.
Panel uniformity for the MSI G24C4 sample is superb since there are no noticeable discolorations, clouding issues, or backlight leaks. The screen looks evenly lit, although one lower corner looked slightly dimmer in all-black images. Take note that this varies between every unit so there are some better or worse specimens out there.
The MSI G24C4 is still prone to blurring, but its overdrive is excellent at reducing persistence when it is at its maxed out. Some overshoot can become visible, but it’s limited to dark scenes or contrasting transitions. This limitation is acceptable since it is situational, but some models like the Gigabyte G27F are better in this regard.
The MSI G24C4 is a FreeSync gaming monitor, but it also works with G-Sync Compatible mode provided that you use the DisplayPort connector. This further enhances the value of the monitor since users are free to use either GPU brand without worrying about losing VRR capabilities. Input lag sits at 5ms at 144Hz, so there will be no delays or de-synced instances while gaming.
Thoughts on the MSI G24C4
The MSI G24C4 is a fantastic choice for budget gamers who want to get fast frames and smooth motion and transitions. The VA panel’s imaging qualities such as its color fidelity are excellent for gaming, plus you can get a bit more if you have access to a colorimeter. The product’s build quality is also surprisingly good for an entry-level model that can outlast other options.
However, the MSI G24C4 is far from perfect since MSI had to make a few cuts to help it meet a specific price point. There isn’t a lot of connectivity options while the VA panel’s pixel response time could use some more improvements when compared to alternatives. It’s a fantastic budget pick, but you have to live with its limitations if you don’t want to spend more money.
