Review of LG 25UM58-P

The LG 25UM58-P is an excellent and affordable ultra-wide monitor which can replace a dual-head 1080p screen setup. If you check its latest pricing, it more or less costs the same as two typical 16:9 displays, making it an energy and cost efficient alternative to two standard monitors. Not to mention, this compact ultra-wide boasts of an excellent IPS panel suitable for casual gaming and productivity up to some degree, plus a superb build quality LG is famous for.

LG 25UM58-P Specifications

Design and Features

Much like its bigger brothers, the LG 25UM58-P features a glossy black finish across its sleek, bezel-free cabinet providing a hint of class for something so affordable. The only issue we see in this aspect is that the texture can attract dust, scratches, and fingerprints easily, so maintaining the LG 25UM58P with a soft cloth is essential.

Unlike the upmarket products from LG, the LG 25UM58-P does not include the Arcline design stand which we find quite attractive, even if it does not offer any ergonomics beyond tilting. If you want more flexibility, you can quickly remove the mechanism to reveal 100 x 100 VESA mounting holes for aftermarket adapters with a similar bolt pattern.

The LG 25UM58-P is essentially the stripped-down variant among the three models in this series since there are only two HDMI 1.4 slots for signal input. At least, you can still use two host devices such as your main PC and maybe a gaming console. There is a 3.5mm audio jack, but there are no built-in speakers with this model so you can only use it as a passthrough for separate audio peripherals.

Display and Performance

The LG 25UM58-P’s main attraction aside from its 21:9 form factor is the gorgeous IPS screen with a 2560 x 1080 resolution has specs which are hard to beat at this price range. The panel can only go up to 60Hz and 5ms in refresh rate and response time, but these numbers are more than adequate for casual use, including gaming. However, this iteration misses the 75Hz and Freesync functionality of its bigger brothers, so if those features tickle your fancy, consider spending a bit more.

This model is rated to have 99% coverage of the sRGB color space, so upon turning it on, it is immediately apparent that this IPS panel is way better than what you can get from other budget offerings. LG makes their screens, so you can bet that the excellence is born out of their hands-on approach to the process and quality control. We did not notice any backlight bleeding or noticeable defects, but there was some slight discoloration the further you moved away from the center. That flaw isn’t enough to ruin every picture, so we still can rate the LG 25UM58-P as an excellent monitor under $200.

We tested a few rounds of Battlefield 1 on the LG 25UM58P and simply put, the compact, ultra-wide wonder does not disappoint. Colors and contrasts were excellent across the diverse landscapes and harsh environments of the game, and on the other hand, even if this model can only do 5ms pixel transition, it was responsive enough so we did not notice any ghosting or input lag which can disrupt your enjoyment.

The LG 25UM58-P is a feature-rich product, and you have plenty of picture presets to choose from. Some of the modes can work for different people, but as always we recommend users to take the time to tweak the settings to their liking because every individual can see shades and saturation levels differently. The black stabilizer also did wonders for rich blacks and grayscale performance but it does have a detrimental effect on well-lit images.

Finally, the LG 25UM58-P is also ideal for productivity since it includes useful features such as picture in picture and picture by picture modes to take advantage of the two HDMI slots. You can run simultaneous video outputs from two different hosts on screen. You also get flicker-free safety and blue light filters to keep your eyes comfortable for longer periods of time. For its price, it is hard to find something to complain about regarding the LG 25UM58-P, but if there was one we noticed, this form factor provides a narrow view of your media since the monitor is only 17 inches tall. Depending on your height and seating arrangement, this could be an issue for you.

Conclusion

The LG 25UM58-P is an excellent choice for thrifty gamers who would want to join in on the ultra-wide gaming arena. Of course, aspiring professionals can also take advantage of this fantastic, bargain monitor to replace messy dual-head setups at home or in the office. Currently, it is almost impossible to find a similarly priced competitor for the LG 25UM58-P and what it offers, making it a must buy for those who wish to have 21:9 viewing capabilities plus a few more.

We only have one complaint about the LG 25UM58-P, and it is the possibility of the screen to be too narrow especially for big users since you don’t get height adjustments with this variant.  Even so, the LG 25UM58-P is still a superb ultra-wide monitor for cheap.
