The Asus ROG Strix XG27AQDPG shares its aesthetic with the XG27AQDMG, along with the confusing nomenclature of each model in the series. It has a matte black finish and an RGB lighting feature at the back to complete themed setups. The screen has a bezel-free design, but it still has inner borders like other modern offerings.
This model’s size is what’s considered to be manageable by today’s standards. It is an upsize to common 24-inch screens, but its not overwhelmingly gigantic for modest desktops. The smaller base makes placement easier, and the 14.55-pound weight makes it very easy to move around.
Its build quality is excellent, as expected from a well-known brand with great standing among enthusiasts. The plastic panels are thick and sturdy, plus there were no cosmetic defects on any of their parts. The included stand is firm and stable, so the screen feels robust despite its thinner chassis.
The Asus ROG Strix XG27AQDPG has an OSD joystick at the back for easy access to its settings and peripherals. It’s located near the logo on the bottom bezel, so it’s easy to get to even if it’s out of sight. Other monitors have remotes, but that’s always necessary for a product to be a great pick.
The included stand offers tilt, swivel, pivot, and height adjustments for your comfort and convenience. Viewing angle issues are a thing of the past, but it’s nice to get a fully-adjustable option for comfort and convenience. You can use VESA mounts, but it’s only necessary for special or specific instances.
The Asus ROG Strix XG27AQDPG’s layout doesn’t offer a lot, just like its predecessors. You get DisplayPort 1.4 with DSC, two HDMI 2.1 slots, and a trio of USB 3.2 ports for upstream and downstream. There is also a 3.5mm jack for headphones as a standard feature, but it doesn’t have any special implementations like other premium alternatives.
The Asus ROG Strix XG27AQDPG also doesn’t have speakers, but that’s not a big deal. Monitors like this deserve immersive headsets, so tinny-sounding built-ins won’t do any good. Asus typically only includes 2-watt pairs, so it’s not worth lamenting over.
Display and Performance
The Asus ROG Strix XG27AQDPG sports a 27-inch OLED panel with a 2560 x 1440 resolution, a 500Hz refresh rate, and a 0.03ms response time. The panel’s brightness is rated at 500 cd/m2 while its contrast is incalculable or infinite. This model is capable of true HDR performance, beating other panel types in producing HDR effects and contrast.
1440p is still universally desirable even if 4K overtook it a while ago as the enthusiast resolution for gamers. It’s nice on the eyes for work and play, and most GPUs can now render high refresh rates with aplomb. It won’t be as sharp as the 4K OLEDs, but you should be fine since 1440p at 27 inches is the sweet spot.
The Asus ROG Strix XG27AQDPG rendered more than 100% of sRGB and 99% of DCI-P3 for rich colors in games and movies. Its default accuracy had a deltaE average of 2.14, making it decently accurate out of the box. Most users won’t have to do anything to it apart from adjusting the brightness to comfortable levels.
Calibrating the monitor reduced the dE average to 1.33, which is excellent, but not on par with some prosumer variants we’ve seen. Its not worth getting a colorimeter since the improvements are negligible, especially for gaming purposes. We can only recommend the purchase if maintaining accuracy is an absolute must-have for the user.
The Asus ROG Strix XG27AQDPG’s panel reached 522 cd/m2 at 100%, making it brighter than some OLED monitors. Its peak isn’t as high, but it still offers the same infinite contrast the other OLEDs provide. It’s great for immersive games with lots of HDR effects or contrasting scenery thanks to these numbers.
Panel uniformity for the test sample was great since there were no blooms or signs of glare on any quadrant of the screen. OLEDs do not have backlights like regular panels, so there is no leaking or bleeding to worry about. It is still prone to burn-in, though, but you can avoid that by taking care of the monitor.
The Asus ROG Strix XG27AQDPG’s response time is superb since it’s near instant due to the per-pixel transitions of the panel type. Fast-paced and contrasting sequences look smooth and clean, making this one of the absolute best options for E-Sports. The 500Hz refresh rate makes it so much better and smoother, but you have to keep your framerate stable to get the best experience.
This model is also compatible with FreeSync and G-Sync for stutter-free gaming. 500Hz isn’t easy to reach, so having VRR, no matter what GPU brand you have, in case of FPS drops, is always nice. Its input lag sits at 2ms at 500Hz, making this one of the select few monitors with virtually no input delay.
Thoughts on the Asus ROG Strix XG27AQDPG
The Asus ROG Strix XG27AQDPG is a fantastic gaming display thanks to its unbeatable speed and brilliant imagery. Combining 500Hz with full gamut coverages and infinite contrast makes a crazy-good combination for discerning gamers who want a solid investment. It’s built well, too, just like many of the ROG monitors we’ve seen over the years.
The only downsides for the Asus ROG Strix XG27AQDPG are its limited I/O and high but reasonable price. We’d like to see more options for the connectivity aspect to make that high price more palatable. It’s an excellent buy overall, especially if you are into esports but want immersive visuals as well.
