The Asus ROG Bezel Free Kit aims to bring three gaming monitors together by hiding the bezels in between to create an immersive viewing experience. This gadget achieves this illusion via light refraction or what Asus calls “optical camouflage” via lenses co-developed with one of its OEM backlight manufacturers. Science wins this time for gamers, but up to what extent?
Asus ROG Bezel Free Kit Design – How the Magic Happens
The Asus ROG Bezel Free Kit is composed of specialized optical materials designed to bend light and create the illusion of hiding the bezels between adjacent monitors. According to Asus, these lenses contain optical micro-structures which angle the light over the bezels to hide them.
The material used is called PMMA which is a translucent thermoplastic that’s stronger than glass. The material allows 90% of illumination to escape. This results in a slightly dimmer appearance than the screens themselves, efficiently hiding the annoying bezels. Asus says that this is a limitation of the material since rooting for less dimming will require the use of glass which is too fragile.
The Asus ROG Bezel Free Kit is composed of two custom clips on the top and bottom that holds the lenses at the perfect angle. During development, Asus’ ROG department determined that the optimal angle of 130 degrees for the lenses is the most comfortable and practical.
The Asus ROG Bezel Free Kit will arrive tailor-fit to each Asus gaming monitor model for smooth and seamless fitment and assembly. This is perfect for Asus monitor owners, but it mostly leaves out the rest who have other brands.
Thoughts on the Asus ROG Bezel Free Kit
The Asus ROG Bezel Free Kit is an exciting new gimmick from the makers of some of the best gaming monitors we have tested. Based on demos and preliminary images from CES 2018, this nifty gadget can hide pesky bezels up to some extent. However, we think that adding it does not change the fact that the bezels are still pretty much apparent, and ultrawides are still the better option if you want the extra screen width.
We need to spend more time with the Asus ROG Bezel Free Kit to gauge it better and address our doubts. The product seems to be an excellent but limited solution and is the currently the only attempt to solve bezel woes for gamers. Kudos to Asus ROG for innovating in this regard and offering the best gaming technologies at CES 2018.
