Preview of LG 32UD99
HDR is already starting to gain ground in the consumer market thanks to the popularity of its promise for improved contrast, color accuracy, and brightness. Up until recently, we have only seen HDR on TVs, movies, and modern gaming consoles. Of course, the PC master race cannot be left behind. HDR offerings are popping out from every display giant we are accustomed to, like BenQ’s SW320. But this time around, LG Electronics also teased their HDR contender in the LG32UD99. This model is poised to represent LG in the flagship HDR-ready prosumer category with its 4K UHD native resolution, HDR compatibility and a lot of other cutting edge features usually associated with the term “Top of the line.”
Design and Features of LG 32UD99
Unfortunately, there is still no news of the actual technical specifications of this model from the Korean brand, apart from the obvious that it has a 4K UHD IPS panel. Most probably, this panel will also feature a 10-bit color depth like the BenQ SW320, but until LG decides to break their silence, we will never know until then. Although, the latest news about the 32UD99 has revealed some of its specifications. We have confirmed that this model will have USB Type-C ports, enabling it to act as a dock for modern laptops such as the 2016 Dell XPS13 or the Apple 2016 MacBook. As we have previously discussed in recent articles, USB Type-C has the capability to charge batteries, transfer data, and transmit audio/video signals in one cable. Another interesting point to consider is what DisplayPort version will this product feature since only DisplayPort 1.4 is compatible with HDR at 4K video signals.
On the physical side of things, the LG 32UD99 will feature a borderless cabinet design with an aluminum finish all throughout the whole product. LG’s signature ArcLine stand is the mechanical choice of this model, but unfortunately, we cannot comment on its ergonomics. But judging from what previous models show, the ArcLine usually only offers tilting adjustments on most models, but the bigger versions get height adjustment as well.
Performance and Features
From what we have seen, we guess that the 32-inch 4K IPS panel also has a 10-bit color depth, with possible 14-bit color LUT similar again to the SW320. They may end up sharing the same screen from the same manufacturer, but we cannot yet ascertain if that is entirely accurate since LG has a panel manufacturing arm (LG Display). The 32UD99 is also HDR10 compliant, ensuring customers will experience true HDR quality images with excellent black and whites, brightness, and contrast never before seen on regular monitors. For the imaging professionals, it is interesting to note that this product is capable of displaying 95% of the DCI-P3 gamut standard, and LG has also stated that this model includes their True Color Pro tech for excellent and accurate color reproduction.
Thoughts/Reactions
The computing world has long spoken about having HDR compatibility, and the tech giants are finally responding to their calls for support in newer products being offered or previewed. HDR content is starting to pour out, and it is only a matter of time before it completely takes over on both the entertainment and professional category. Despite the limited info we have on the LG 32UD99, we can say that this product has the potential to grab the top spot in the first generation of HDR monitors. From its sleek and sophisticated look to its array of cutting edge features such as USB Type-C, HDR10 compliance, packaged into a beautiful 4K IPS panel. The information is very limited, and LG has been silent about their new products that are going to star in the upcoming CES 2017 Tradeshow. There is no pricing as of the time of this writing, but we guess the 32UD99 will cost at least over a thousand dollars. There are only weeks between today and the CES 2017 schedule, so if you are interested in this product or if you are looking to jump on the HDR wagon, stay tuned as we will update this article with more details, once they become available.
