Design and Features
The LG 34BQ77QC-B has a simple, all-business aesthetic, so it fits with any class of workstation or setup. The device has a matte black finish instead of the stark white and silver finish most of its display products have. The display has a bezel-free design, although it still has inner borders even if they are not that noticeable against the size of the display.
It’s a large monitor, but the simpler base design and gentle curve enable it to consume less space than other models. It only needs 10 inches, but that 32-inch width can be an issue if you have a narrow desk and bookshelf speakers. It’s also surprising how light this monitor is for its size, so it should be fairly easy to move it around and reorganize it.
The monitor’s build quality is great and in line with what we saw on the brand’s computing products. The plastic panels are thick and sturdy, and there were no signs of cosmetic defects on any of its parts. The monitor’s stand does a good job of keeping it upright, although it can wobble if you nudge it accidentally.
The LG 34BQ77QC-B has an OSD joystick above its USB hub near the right-hand side of the screen. It is easy to use, but you have to reach in a bit since the screen is wider. The monitor is also compatible with the brand’s OnScreen control app, so there is another layer of convenience for some of its features.
The included stand offers tilt, swivel, and height adjustments for your comfort and convenience. It’s easy to get a good viewing angle which will help you avoid strain during extended hours of use. You can use VESA mounts, but that only becomes necessary in special instances.
The highlight of the LG 34BQ77QC-B is the hardware that comes with it, starting with its connectivity layout. The device primarily has DisplayPort 1.4 and two HDMI 2.0 slots, but it also has a 90-watt USB-C port with DP Alt Mode. You also get two ports each for USB 3.0 and USB 2.0, an RJ45 LAN port, and a 3.5mm jack for headphones.
But what makes this monitor unique is its built-in webcam which pops up on top of the chassis. It provides decent clarity in well-lit rooms, and it has microphones that are sensitive enough to capture your comms while sitting on your desk. Note that you need to either connect the monitor via USB-C or its USB-B upstream slot for these to function.
The conferencing setup is then complicated by a pair of 5-watt speakers which can offer plenty of volume. It distorts if set to maximum and is incapable of immersive bass response, but it’s clear enough for voice communications. We still prefer headsets, but you already have a decent set for audio input and output with the monitor.
Display and Performance
The LG 34BQ77QC-B sports a 34-inch curved IPS panel with a 3440 x 1440 resolution, a 60Hz refresh rate, and a 5ms response time. The backlight has a 300 cd/m2 output while its contrast is listed at 1000:1 like most IPS panels. This model is compatible with HDR10, but it is not certified by VESA since it doesn’t have the necessary specifications for it.
34-inch ultrawides are considered a niche, but they are popular for both gaming and productivity. The extra space offers immersive value and it allows workers to enhance their productivity. Visibility and legibility are also excellent, so most won’t need to feel the need to use scaling to make things readable.
The LG 34BQ77QC-B covers 99% sRGB and 82% of DCI-P3 for decent color performance in any type of use. Its default accuracy isn’t the best with a dE average of 2.79, but it’s decent enough for immediate use. Most users won’t feel the need to optimize since it already looks natural.
Calibrating it produced fantastic results since the deltaE average dropped to an impressive 0.67. That makes it suitable for editing work and content creation even if it doesn’t offer wider gamut coverage like some prosumer models. Note that you will need a colorimeter to achieve comparable results, but those are only practical if you are into color-critical work.
The LG 34BQ77QC-B’s backlight reached 318 cd/m2 at 100% which is plenty for most indoor settings. Its contrast reached 1081:1 at 40% brightness, so it is slightly better compared to other IPS panels in this regard. However, that also means that its incapable of deep blacks and meaningful HDR performance.
Panel uniformity for the test sample had some backlight bleeding at the top and bottom edges of the screen. This affected its appearance in dark scenes since there were some clouding issues in the affected areas. Note that this can vary with every monitor made due to manufactural tolerances, so there are better units out there.
The LG 34BQ77QC-B isn’t the fastest in its category when it comes to pixel response time, but that’s mostly because it’s limited to 60Hz. Setting its overdrive to its Fast setting helped in reducing the persistence. It’s not comparable with a 144Hz model, but it’s decent for casual or immersive gaming.
The LG 34BQ77QC-B isn’t compatible with FreeSync or G-Sync, which eliminates tearing and stuttering. However, that’s understandable since it was meant for business and productivity rather than gaming. Its input lag sits at 9ms at 60Hz, so users won’t feel delays in any use.
Thoughts on the LG 34BQ77QC-B
The LG 34BQ77QC-B is a great choice if you want a reasonably priced display solution. The ultrawide panel offers plenty of room for multitasking, and it doesn’t need any more gear to make it effective for remote work. It is not accurate out of the box, but it responds well to calibration for those that have colorimeters.
However, the LG 34BQ77QC-B is far from perfect, just like most monitors with lower price points. The weaknesses of IPS are apparent in this model, and we expected better out-of-the-box image quality since it focuses on that more than speed. We think it’s still a great buy, especially since most of the conferencing monitors are only made in 16:9.
