The Nixeus NX-EDG27S aims to provide crucial specs such as a 2560 x 1440 resolution at 144Hz and FreeSync for a friendly price. QHD is the next standard for high-resolution gaming without requiring a drastic GPU upgrade, making this model attractive to thrifty gamers who are looking to get the best out of every buck. Of course, there will be some cut corners with the Nixeus NX-EDG27S, but the brand’s steady reputation in value gaming monitors is already a big plus.

Design and Features
The Nixeus NX-EDG27S employs a classic, industrial design which isn’t appealing, but it does work towards savings in manufacturing costs. The matte black bezels are more or less an inch thick each, putting the design years behind when compared to today’s standards. However, the looks aren’t always important when considering value-oriented products because brands like Nixeus do not invest too much in aesthetics.
There are two variants of this model, and the Nixeus NX-EDG27S is the non-ergonomic offering which only has 15 degrees of tilt. The base is made of tempered glass as an attempt to make it look attractive and clean, but the weight of the material should also help keep the cabinet upright. The good news is that this part is removable and you can mount the cabinet to any VESA 100 x 100 compatible armature.
If an ergonomic stand is worth the extra price, you can get the NX-EDG27 variant for more cash. This iteration includes a fully-adjustable stand with tilt, swivel, height, and pivot adjustments to suit a wider range of needs. Specs wise, the two models aren’t different, so it is up to the consumers to decide on which one suits their needs best.
To cut pricing, the Nixeus NX-EDG27S doesn’t have nifty extras such as OSD remotes or USB hubs. The I/O panel includes DisplayPort 1.2, HDMI 1.4 and 2.0, a DVI-DL connector, and 3.5mm audio jacks. There is a pair of stereo speakers included for the price, but we cannot comment yet on its quality and clarity.
Display and Performance
The Nixeus NX-EDG27S features a 27-inch IPS panel with a 2560 x 1440 QHD resolution, 4ms response time, 144Hz refresh rate, and typical contrast ratio of 1000:1. Some skeptics might be too quick to pass this model off regarding imaging quality, but the AU Optronics module used here is similar the one found in prominent models like the Asus MG279Q and Acer XB271HU. If that’s the case, near perfect sRGB coverage and minimum Delta E scores are easily within reach.
The brand also promises low input lag for the Nixeus NX-EDG27S and comparing from the more expensive Asus and Acer offerings suggest we will see a sub-10ms performance from this model. Even if it misses by a few frames, this product’s value for performance will be challenging to beat. The IPS panel mentioned is excellent at everything it does, although early models were plagued with backlight bleeding or IPS glow issues much to the dismay of owners.
The most attractive aspect of the Nixeus NX-EDG27S is its 1440p at 144Hz performance which until recently, you cannot get with a budget below $500. High refresh rates coupled with excellent viewing angles and color vibrancy of IPS technology is surely a treat, especially if consumers can save a chunk of cash.
FreeSync also joins the Nixeus NX-EDG27S’s toolset with an excellent certified range of 30Hz to 144Hz with LFC. The VRR tech does not incur a premium tax unlike G-Sync, plus, it is invaluable at 1440p where even the top AMD cards of the current generation might struggle. Although in fairness to Nvidia owners, we wish Nixeus would make a G-Sync variant in the future which is competitively priced against the few options that we have now.
Thoughts
The Nixeus NX-EDG27S is an attractive upgrade option with all the nifty features such as FreeSync and 144Hz capabilities for a lower price. FreeSync gaming monitors are already considered affordable in the market since pricing has come down substantially in recent months, but having an option where you could save fifty bucks or makes choosing all the more enjoyable.
To compare, the fantastic Asus MG279Q costs $550 USD while this model is only asking $409.99 at the time of this writing. If you want the ergonomic variant, expect to pay an additional $50 or so when it becomes available.
